BrookLynk - A response to our community needs.

In the summer of 2014, a group of young people from the Brooklyns Youth Council surveyed over 1,000 of their peers and found that over 60% of young people in the Brooklyns were not participating in summer programming and that over 50% of those young people were interested in joining the workforce. Furthermore, there are significant shifts happening in our local workforce as thousands of highly-skilled employees are retiring and nearly 250,000 new jobs are expected to be added in the Minneapolis/St. Paul region by 2030.

BrookLynk is directed by the Cities of Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park. In 2015, with the leadership of the Brooklyn Bridge Alliance for Youth, BrookLynk was developed as a response to the needs of our community. BrookLynk bridges the gaps between the needs of our local employers and the opportunities that our young people need to develop their pathway to college and career.

Modeled after STEP-UP Minneapolis - a nationally recognized summer youth employment program that has served over 20,000 Minneapolis youth - BrookLynk is bringing a proven framework for summer youth employment to our community. BrookLynk facilitates training for youth ages 14-21 where they learn essential job skills such as interviewing, networking, professionalism, and collaboration skills. BrookLynk also coordinates paid summer internships with local employers for young people ages 16-21.

In its first three years of programming, BrookLynk has been able to successfully match nearly 200 young people to paid summer internship opportunities with local employers. BrookLynk has also trained over 400 young people with essential job skills. For the summer of 2018, BrookLynk looks forward to continuing to bringing together business needs and youth experiences to increase pathways to prosperity.
